If you havent read the article read it here and also download the movies - BitTorrent.

-----------------------------------------

These new features in the source engine go hand in hand with HDR, it gives the game (Day of Defeat Source atm) a more cinematic/realisitic feel. The features added are Depth of Field, Motion Blur, Film Grain and Color correction.

These new effects are amazing, it really brings an element of what you see into games. im not sure if these will ever be realsed in DODS let alone CSS as this might just be a bit of promotion upon Valves part.

But it does start giving the idea of being immersed into the game, as games atm have only one focus point, the whole screen.

Aside from the film grain - the new effects look amazing, but my only concern is that they are going to end up pushing the GPU so much that lower end machines will just not be able to play it.

Yeh that could be a point, but with all of Valves games they like to keep the lower and older PC gamers happy as well, so it might be a case that the new stuff is just turn off and onable.

The thing with all these enhancements is that they make the game harder to play. (And film grain doesn't make you believe you're in the game, you're just a spectator watching an old war movie).

I disabled HDR and all the other 'fancy' effects in my Steam games so that I'm more 'tactically aware' and not distracted by the surfaces changing brightness (and making it easier on my eyes too).

I quite like the Depth of field and motion blur, but the game (dod) is fast paced and I find im always rushing around not really taking interest in the graphics. Maybe if it gets to css it'll be better, slower pace gives time to take in what you see. Its not going to suddenly turn any game into the best thing since sliced bread tho cause gameplay is the main thing.
