Okies need some help.....

Right some of you will know that I got the recent msn virus thingy but managed to get it all cleared out and everything was running fine again.

end of last week for some unknown reason MSN refused to let me sign in and also steam refused to start. The problem is still there. I havnt changed any security settings.

I have been trying to remove Norton from my computer as it got killed by the virus but have so far not been able to move it. The other thing is that the virus seems to have killed the windows security centre also. when I click on the WSC icon it says "WSC is currently unavailable because the service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer and then re-open the WSC again" When I do this I get the same message

I'm thinking that either Norton firewall or windows firewall is stopping me from getting on steam and MSN. But I cannot access either to change the settings or to switch them off.

So basicaly.....how can I delete Norton and how do I fix the WSC????

I hate to sound like a doom-monger mate but I really think you should bite the bullet and reinstall XP and all your other applications.

You said you've removed the virus - I'd beg to differ. Sounds to me like some of it is still lurking.
Virus' often target your security software.

I can understand your reluctance to reinstall - it can be a pain - but I honestly think it'll be worth the effort.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

i only just reformatted, and although it is a pain, its nice to have a new, clean hard disk and its not too much trouble as long as you prepare (gather up all the disks with the stuff youll need to re-install beforehand so that you arent searching all over and stuff for them when you need to use them)

Unfortunatly i aggree. AS you know i had the same the same virus (then i passed it onto you ).. I tried to fight the virus, but because of its manipulation of other software and my system i decided that the quickest and easiest way to get it from my system was a complete reinstall.
If you do decide to reinstall Make sure that you backup all of your files and configs maps etc on dvds. i had over 48gigs off files that i backed up, it was a pain in the arse, but it is worth it.
With your Programmes, make sure that you have all of your serial numbers at hand, and also keep a backup of your passwords.

Good luck mate.

So reinstaling do you mean formating HD, Havent you tried to repair XP first? Just my thought.

And you've not had ur coumputer long so u shudnt have that much on ur HD.

You cant tell butch to copy all his files to cdrw's, he wud have to spend a fortune on them coz of the amount of porn his got on there.

unless i can have a pop at your OS, i cant do much help.

but it sounds like the virus has shut down some of your services, and as they are not restarting, i would make a guess you still have the virus.

if your services are down, your computer has no firewall, antivirus or security updates.

this means the virus has full access to the internet, and this could be a bad bad thing.

your data/passwords/anything you type is at risk, and your computer could be being used to attack other people / websites

running XP Repair will not fix the problem as this only reinstalls core parts of the OS, not shut down viruses.

format, then full re-install would be the best move to prevent more damage.

hmmm this did cross my mind about the formatting. Thing is that when I had the virus I went to go and reformat it. i was in the fits of despair and couldnt be arsed mucking around with it anymore. So I went and followed what I thought was to reformat the HD but have now ended up with 2 copies of xp on the puter lol.

I do have security on the puter now. Virus checker and a firewall which was working fine until this recent cock-up

I forget the exact wording but when you put the XP disc in, during the installation process it asks you if you want to wipe the data that's currently on the selected partition.

i've got this virus too as shadowdog knows(*cough*cough*)and the best thing to do is indeed to reinstall but you can back up your files on an other hardware if you have one. it's much faster and less expensive than dvds
