Going to install a couple of 500Gb HD in my machine to setup a 1Tb RAID 0 array this weekend...

Question is, which make of HD - Maxtor, WD, etc... Any recommendations?

WD are pritty good, I would avoid maxtor. Samsung are ment to be v good now and normaly come with a 3 year warrenty.

Edit: having looked WD and seagate do a 5 year warrenty now and both are good quality. Seems the way to go.

YOU asking the N00bs for advice

Well I would say if you want quiet drives Samsung are very good.

I have 2x160gb and 2x250gb raid 0 arrays on mine and they are Western digital 16mb cache drives (from memory)

I would say try and get 16mb cache minimum drives if you can.

A review bit old tho. http://www.techspot.com/reviews/hardware/seagate500gb_wd400gb_hd/

anyway who am i kidding im sure all the main players in the HDD market are decent enough the differences will be in milli seconds.

Just use 4x raptor drives instead!

I'd have said western or seagate...

All depends on whether you want functional, reliable or cheap.

Bearing in mind it's you, I'm going with reliable.

Awesome how the first comment said exactly what I was thinking. Basically, not Maxtor

I have 2 x seagate barracuda 500gig. No complaints, very nice. I would recommend to anyone TBH.

Thinking I may leave "volume" for a few months, and just go for speed this month instead...

How about a pair of WD Raptor 150GB 10000RPM instead in RAID 0.

Raptors are great, only downside is they can be noisy as they spin so fast.... but if you want speed... its Raptors or solid state.

I nearly suggested you hang it all and go for 2 raptors in a raid 0 but I thought even you wouldn't waste money on doing that Hubby...

Then again I could be misguided as to your mental state...

Go for it!

Then hopefully it will "speed" you onto the server

64 GB = a bit small

Suppose you could use them as C: drives and get a couple of big drives for data storage.
