Stop using the clunky windows media player, VLC will play anything. From.. DVD, MPG, FLV, AVI, XVID, DIVX, MOV, MP4, WMV, ASF, OGG, REAL, WAV, MP3, MP4, 3GP.. and pretty much any video or media file.

I use this all the time now. Personally I don't find it as comfortable as Media Player Classic, but with VLC you don't need codec packs. It's brilliant! And yea, it even has its own DVD decoder...

I have been using it for a year or two now - its the best player out there and its free. Beats any of the windows crap hands down IMO

I also use CCCP Codec pack - http://cccp-project.net/ - not sure of the status of the codecs included in here, but does include a codec for .MKV playback for your HiDef sources.
