Right, I'm fed up of this. I miss you guys and the server too much, and I wanna start playing regularly again. The only problem with this is my huge lag spikes I keep getting. Frog already knows somewhat of the problem I've been getting (if he remembers). Basically, at spawn, and then at random intervals throughout the rest ofthe round, I jsut get huge spikes. Sometimes it cuts out for more than 5 seconds.
Now, for me this just makes the game more frustating than fun, especially when you warp round a corner, and by the time you come to, you're dead.
I've tried everyhting I can think of, and I'm pretty sure its not the router, as that was working fine on the same settings not all that long ago. It only seems to have started since my OS upgrade. So, my first question would be to the others who have Vista (Hubby and G-Rox, I think?) Have oyu had any problems like this? I've tried lots of other games, and CS seems to be the only one that does this. Even other Steam/Source games work fine.
Pahleeeease help a brutha out with any suggestions. its doing my nut in.

I have had the same problem before and I'm on XP. I don't know what caused it and why it all of a sudden just started happening but I did stop all of a sudden. I odnt know what I done but I think I tried everything possible.

I tried the vista betas and also thought it was shit from them, but now I have the proper release I actually think it's good. Definitely an improvement from XP imo.

I know its shit, but you do actually get used to it. And since my XP is fecked, I have limited options, other than forking out anoth £70 for that. I'd rather stick with Vista, which in every other regard seems to be doing the job fine.

oh jesus... in my absence a few vista supporters have been allowed to live without eternal punishment

its the slowest most annoying heap of shit ive ever used... lets just take updating video drivers for example... 4 whole restarts.

so much for "restarting less"... i'll stick with xp's annoying 1 restart thanks.

oh and can you say "pointless annoying security messages"... you know.. the ones that were bypassed before vista even went final... the ones that serve only to annoy the shit out of you when your doing some maintenance you only have to keep doing on windows...

roll on linux @ home... better gaming support (i.e. steam) and im moving over.

try out linux now (http://www.ubuntu.com - yes i know it looks ugly using default skin) - no install needed - download and burn to a cd for free and boot into a real OS

It isn't really slower than XP for me, seems pretty responsive. Four restarts for video drivers?! I didn't get that, just installed them and restarted and it was fine (I'm on nvidia btw, maybe thats a ATI thing).

You can also just disable the UAC to stop all of the annoying security things. Both XP and Vista have some annoying things that are on by default, but you can just disable them.

That Ubuntu is quite good frog, I keep trying that every now and then, you can actually run css in steam using wine to run windows apps in it. It uses a dx8 substitute thing, but it still looks OK.

i put my 2 year old laptop running XP next to a 1 week old laptop running vista

even with my laptop CPU clocked down the UI in XP is far more responsive even with my lappys 512mb ram vrs the vista 2gb lappy.

everything down to simply scrolling a loaded webpage was faster on XP...

and no i dont have a crazy powerful laptop.... its an onboard intel mobile graphics card with 2mb of shared ram... vrs the new laptops geforce7 with 1gb of shared

sure, the test wasnt 100% fair....
i didnt have a stop watch timing things...
and my laptop has an Intel chipset vrs the others AMD chip (huge disadvantage for the AMD lappy)

it was just the feel of the end product.....

vista i sat there waiting for the OS....

XP waits for me.

Well yeah I guess it depends a lot on the hardware, but for me it is very responsive, I don't have to wait for it so I'm happy. When I tried the beta one of the reasons I thought it was shit at first was how slow it was, but I think they have improved it a lot since then. I'm surprised though that simple scrolling on a website was slower for you, maybe that could of been down to shitty video drivers or something.

Also I'm not surprised it uses up more resources that XP. XP was released in 2001, and vista relatively recently, it's bound to have higher system requirements than XP. It's fair enough some people dislike it because they have lag, but from my experience without lag I think it's OK .

Vista is shite.. official!

At work i have 2 Dual core XP workstations for work and several test machines G5 dual boot, a eMac dual boot an iMac OS9.2 and a laptop on Vista. Not one of the guys i work with (some of the best Perl and frontend developers in the country!) will touch the 'SMell' (Dell Vista laptop).. not even Microsofts own software will run on Vista, and even IE7's over active secruity fucks up with lots of secure connections.. Kill Vista, if you have to use a Microsoft OS use XP.

Get rid of Vista, its only there for ppl that want things to look pretty and dont know how to use a PC.. you can usually find these ppl getting hardware and advice at PCworld.

I think how bad it is, is hyped a bit. I'm not saying it's perfect, it certainly isn't. But neither is XP. I wouldn't say I'm the type of person who just "want things to look pretty and don't know how to use a PC", and I think it's OK. I'm definitely not going to complain that it does look pretty either, it looks nicer than previous versions of windows, which is only a good thing IMO.

It just seems people go over the top a bit, I just don't understand the hatred for an OS. I can understand people disliking it because it's crap in their opinion but it's being referred to as if it's going around killing babies.

Could someone give me a list of what it worse about it than XP? I would honestly like to know if there is some serious reasons for me not to use it as some peoples strong opinions about it lead me to think.

ROFL at whoever would use IE7 anyways .
