First off a list of what was running at the time of the problem.

VLC - playing at 1/4 screen (40min episode of Boston Legal)

Msn - Minimised

Alok video/mp4 converter - Converting a file from wmv - avi

65 processes running

FAN SPEEDS

case fans = full
Cpu fan = 83% 3792rpm
Gfx fan = 60% 2761rpm

Cpu temp = 47c
Ambiant = 28c
HDD1 = 26c
HDD2 = 25c
Temp 1 = 47c

Ok what is happening is at random times when i was doing this my monitor goes into power saver mode (standby) so i have no choice but to turn the pc off and on again. I can't get the screen back any other way. I have unpluged the screen from everything and back in and nothing happened and also connected it to the pc both with VGA and DVI and then when it happend switched between the 2 to see if it would bring the screen back. The monitor is a Dell UltraSharp™ 2007WFP 20.1" Widescreen.

This has happened a few times and i don't want it to keep happening.

My pc specs btw are

Asus -
Intel pentium 4 540 Prescott 3.2ghz
2 x 1 gig ram DDR (pc3200 200mhz)
2 x 250 gig HDD
Nvidia 6600 256mb

Anyone else had any problems like this? Or heard of anything?

Am i over working my pc?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you have another monitor try swaping them and see if the problem still happens, if so then it could possibly be video card failure.

Also, have you checked the power management settings?

Yeah it sounds like ur gfxcard in all fairness. If its overheating or isnt getting sufficient power it may be turning iteself off. Even a momentary spike on the heat of the card can cause that. My old card when it was overheating would attempt to switch to a different resolution but my monitor didnt support that so my screen went into standby. Check the fan on the gfxcard and see if theres any dust or other crap in there. Otherwise i have no idea

edit:- actually i read somewhere recently that 6600's are tempermental about traces of old drivers still hanging around. Run drivercleaner pro and see if theres old drivers hanging around (like if u upgraded from an older card and didnt remove the driver)

In my last pc I had a 6600, monitor would regulary turn itself off when I was in-game. Try cleaning if before using drivercleaner.

a tin of compressed air should take care of that for you. just remember to get the correct nozzle and not the airhorn one unless you want to waken it up a bit

Just an update. My monitor went into standby mode again, this time i was copying files from a cd to my pc and watching a video in vlc only this time my monitor came back on and i got the message below. The last time i updated my graphics card drivers was about a month ago when i move back to uni.

(oh and i didnt get the update prompt when i restarted)

I would suggest a complete uninstall and reinstall of the Nvidia drivers.
