Homeplugs

Due to the really shit transfer rates wireless gives you - has anyone had any experience of Homeplugs?

Would I get better speeds than "average" wireless connection? (currently running 802.11g and reporting about 24Mbps - 36Mbps - thick walls!)

Maplin has a stock of them.
I'm not sure how much of an improvement in transfer rates you'd get, they are generally sold to people who have old houses with stone walls etc where the wireless won't penetrate it. Probably not worth the money to be honest.

I have a set of cheap shit ones. Its better than wireless in the way that the signal doesn't drop all the time (good for gaming ). The ones I have has a really slow transfer rate, but it is much more consistent than a wireless connection. If you pay for some of the faster plugs I think you will get better speeds than on wireless, I can't really guarantee that though and the better ones are a bit expensive.

imo stick with wireless....

the walls in your house are not thick enough to cause any problems so the issue lies either with the wireless access point or the wireless NIC (configuration or just the overall quality)

force the NIC and AP into "G Only" mode - its probably dropping to B

my wireless is rock solid, so not all of them are bad

I'm using Homeplugs atm, seem pretty solid to me. I've never used wireless on my main machine cos i've heard of too many ppl having issues with gaming. Always hardwired til recently but the layout of my new house makes ethernet cables a bit impractical.

My advice would be follow frog's instructions and see if it helps first, and if not try these out.

If you don't want to send cash straight to them, amazon sell them at reasonable price. (note: this is a pack of 2 but they sell them individually too, you'll need one to connect to your router, and another for each PC you want to connect).

ive been gaming over a wireless "bridge" for the past week-or-so (1 router has the modem and is the main gateway, and the 2nd has the switch plugging into my desktop) and imo ive been quite impressed.

of course there is not as much throughput as wired connections, so that sometimes hinders it - but when gaming my pings are better than they used to be on wired... that could be due to my new packet shaping though

but anyway, this shows as long as you have decent hardware, even gaming over wireless can be fine...

It's not so much gaming I'm worried about - it's tranferring stuf between machines. On wireless, the best I can squeeze out of it is 1.6 Mb/sec, and on a large file this can take ages

I've got all the bits and bobs to lay some cable this weekend, so problem solved

go for a decent g device then... some of them can push 300mbs
