Just a stupid thing that keeps pissing me off.

Nearly every time i boot up my computer, 50/50 chance, my taskbar and start menu thingy at the bottom of screen wont work, try clicking on it and its like it aint there, so i have to restart computer. Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

start it in safe mode and see if it still does it.

my guess is its another program not shutting down/giving focus

I've seen it before a lot (IT specialist for a living) and it's a screwed up explorer shell.
Only fix is to back up your files and do a complete reinstall of windows.

i cant beleive a full reinstall is the only fix

and if it were explorer, it would do it in safe-mode aswel, since safe mode still uses the same shell, just does not load any extra applications / un-needed services. . .

i guess pug, youve not started it in safe mode to test?
you only have to press F8 . . . .

Of course it isn't, but you'd need to be a rocket scientist to repair all the little wrongs, in which same time you could've reinstalled windows...

I reinstall windows every month anyways, after a reinstall everything just runs smoother, cause windows has less to load.

I just remembered summin:
Each time I got that, I could kill the "explorer.exe" process, restart it by typing "explorer" in new task, and it would be partially solved. Annoying bugs remain, such as minimizing windows can't be done anymore that session by clicking on their taskbar icon, but it's better then nuttin.

All this is doen in the task manager btw. (shortcut ctrl+alt+del in winXP, and if you got classic login system ctrl+shift+esc will work also)
