Hellish Internet problems...

OK, you'll know how my setup is at the moment if oyu read nixy's post abotu his FPS. Whenever i start up my PC, 2/3rds of the time my modem fails to initialise and i get no dial tone. The rest of the time i can connect to the internet mostly okay (it takes ages e.t.c but i get on eventually). Now, most of the time when i do get on disconnects me after a minute or two, when i doesn't i can browse the internet, however the second i start anything else other than mozilla up (Steam, BF2, WoW etc) I instantly get disconnected, then reconnected when i quit the program.....

Confused I am?

i did buy a router, but the software is bugged and wont install on either mine or my dad's PCs. So we can't get it to work. If i get one which does work, do you think this will solve my connection problems?

Anyway, don't expect to see me on CS for a bit, a combination of this and going to Rome mean i won't be able to play for a bit.

OK a few things, ADSL has no dial tone so no need to listen out for that..
All good routers dont need software, you connect to them via a local IP, you should purchase a decent Netgear one for ease of use.

i would do the following, check all your Microfilters and cables, make sure they are not snagged or broken.
check the USB port and LAN ports, make sure there is no crap in there.

Borrow a friends router or modem and try that, it might be a hardware fault.

Once you do that get onto your ISP and tell them all your problems, they will ask you to do a few checks, if they dont work then stay on the line and ask them to check your line remotely, it might be a line or an exchange issue.. ISPs dont like to help you out, but if you bug them and be nice they will put you onto the proper support, not some student with a manual.

If all else fails after that let me know, i might be able to help you out..

edit:: also make sure that all the phones connected to sockets are recently new, try unpluging them all and connecting, there is a problem with older phones making adsl disconnecting.

thanks shad, ill try out these ideas. I got a Linksys router, the software is kinda.... wierd. It does some kind of check, which can only be compelted whilst you are connected to the internet, and whilst the phone line is going through my router, not the old modem. The only problem is i can't connect to the internet through the router, im guessing until the softwaer is installed... so it just wont install. anywhoo, ill try this stuff out
