I am sorry to say, but you won't be able to run Source smoothly on 5200 with any motherboard, and to buy a decent card + good motherboard 200 pounds is not enough.

I suggest you save some more money to perform a much more solid upgrade. I will post some target configurations you can aim at in a minute.

Here is something to aim at:

Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard

£76.32

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939)

£98.64

XFX GeForce 6800 XT Extreme Edition 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

£93.94

Total: £268,90

Now this will be a solid improvement from what you have now (and just 68.90 more to save).

If you really want to make a breakthrough try to chip in another 20-30 quid to get another 512 MB of RAM.

Regarding, RAM.

RAM has two main things you have to worry about:

Size (data capacity, it affects how many things you can run at the same time). For example, HL2 is a big program, it has lots of things it needs processed so it loads itself to RAM and occupies, say, 256 MB of memory. That means there is still 256 MB left for system processes and any other programs you are running.

Frequency (how fast RAM "talks" to the CPU). The faster it "talks" the better. This is quite technical.

Each processor has External and Internal frequency.

For example, your Pentium 4 has EXTERNAL FREQUENCY of 2.5 GHz, but it's internal clock is only 100 MHz. RAM frequency is 2 times the INTERNAL FREQUENCY of the CPU. I.e. 200 MHz in your case. Main bus frequency is 4 times the CPU internal frequency.

So, for example, my PC at home is running P4 2.8C @ 3.44 GHz. Its internal frequency is about 246 MHz. My RAM runs @ 492 MHz and my main bus is at 984 MHz.

Important notes when buying RAM:

> Try not to have more than 2 modules.
> They have to be inserted into slots of the same colour.
> Try to buy modules of the same brand.
> It is HIGHLY recommended to have modules of the same capacity.
> Never run RAM modules with different maximum frequencies.
