Memory

Right, i built a new pc a few weeks ago....

After about a week, the Crucial GB stick of RAM stopped working, the UGuru Hex Display said it was a memory problem.

I lent a 256mb RAM module off Chris Ripper, tried the pc using that RAM,and the pc worked fine.

I then returned the Crucial RAM to Ebuyer and got a direct replacement.

It arrived today, works fine, however the pc seems to be running slower than it was when i had the first GB stick of RAM i.e. Taking longer for map change, connecting to server's, longer boot-up time.

Now i was just wondering if anyone had any idea as im getting a bit irritated...

One thing i thought...

Now that i have made a hardware change, do i need t reinstall Windows... i know that may sound stupid, but its just something i thourght about

(sorry, if there's any bad spelling in this post)

If anyone could give me any tips or pointers, or just suggest what the problem may be...it may turn out that im just being paranoid..

Thanks in advance...

Hi Drew,

Did you download/install anything while you had Ripper's memory card in?

It may be a slightly different spec of ram that theyve sent as a replacement, maybe a lower cas latency. just try defragng ur harddrive as virtual memory may have juggled things about when it needed to increase its size. When changing memory its very rare u wud need to alter anything let alone reinstall windows.
If defraging doesnt work try entering this as a launch option for css -heapsize 512000

probably just needs a good defrag after you instlled the gbs of css files.

dont use windows defragger, its a heap of shit and probably wont defrag much at all, let alone the whole drive.

Well, i used the windows defragger and like Frog said...it didnt do too much. The system is running a bit better now, but no doubt it will benefit from a decent defrag...

Also have Virus/Adware/Spyware scanned, none found, apart from a few tracking cookies which were then removed.

The only reason i can think of is that, maybe i did download something dodgy or something like that...

And yeah, Like Pug said...

Could you suggest some decent alternatives for the windows defragger?

Thanks...

i use O&O Defrag myself, does a 'true' whole drive drefrag and can even be set to do group files together by last access time and stuff, wich, imo, speeds stuff up a hella lot - but - it aint free.

*much time passes*

there IS a free version that i have just found, but its old, and does not support evrything.

still probably better than the windows 1 tho

I just noticed one of the adverts on our site ^ is for Diskeeper 9 at www.diskeeper.com

I use the free version: Diskeeper lite.

Coincidence or what?
